Dr. Sidawi is an Orlando based, UF trained physician who is happy to be serving the community he grew up in by offering a combination of psychiatric medication management and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
Psychiatric medication management is a systematic approach used by healthcare providers, primarily psychiatrists, to ensure that medications prescribed for mental health conditions are used safely and effectively. This process includes:
Assessment: Evaluating the patient’s mental health condition, medical history, and any other medications to avoid potential drug interactions.
Prescription: Selecting the appropriate medication based on the diagnosis, taking into account the patient’s specific symptoms, health status, and any other relevant factors.
Monitoring: Regularly reviewing the patient’s response to the medication, including effectiveness and side effects, to make necessary adjustments in dosage or to switch medications if needed.
Education: Providing information to the patient about the medication, including how to take it, possible side effects, and the importance of adherence to the prescribed treatment plan.
The goal of psychiatric medication management is to find the most effective medication regimen with the fewest side effects, tailored to the individual needs of the patient, to improve their mental health and quality of life.
Psychiatrists, medical doctors specializing in mental health, follow a structured process to prescribe medications:
Diagnosis: They diagnose the mental health condition and select medications to target its symptoms, considering factors like drug metabolism, potential interactions, and side effects.
Prescription: Using the diagnosis, they prescribe the most suitable medication, taking into account the individual’s unique physiological needs.
Monitoring: Psychiatrists monitor the medication’s effects, adjusting dosages as needed and conducting medical tests if necessary to ensure safety and effectiveness. This process also helps distinguish between symptoms of the mental health condition and other possible medical issues.
Psychologists and counselors do not prescribe medications as they do not receive medical training. This responsibility is reserved for psychiatrists or PMHNPs.

It is always helpful to discuss any hesitance or concerns you have about starting or continuing a medication. A good provider should listen to your concerns and work with you to provide the best care possible that fits your goals and values. With effective medication management, many individuals with mental health conditions can lead fulfilling and productive lives.
