When is Vyvanse used?

Vyvanse is commonly prescribed for ADHD when stimulant medications are considered the most effective treatment for managing symptoms. It is frequently preferred for its prolonged action and smooth release. Vyvanse is also used in the treatment of binge eating, which may be seen in binge eating disorder, bulimia, or anorexia. It it typically used to help individuals who experience frequent binge episodes and have not found relief from other treatments, such as therapy or first line medications. Vyvanse can help reduce the frequency of binge episodes and support individuals in managing the disorder more effectively.

What are Vyvanse’s main benefits?

Vyvanse offers significant benefits for individuals with ADHD, including improved focus and attention, as well as reduced impulsivity and hyperactivity. These effects can lead to better self-control and improved functioning in both social and professional environments. Many people with ADHD struggle with executive functions such as planning, organization, and task completion. Vyvanse can enhance these cognitive skills, making it easier to manage daily responsibilities. Additionally, Vyvanse is effective in managing binge eating disorder by reducing the urge to binge and encouraging healthier eating behaviors.

What are Vyvanse’s most common side effects?

The most common side effects experienced by those on Vyvanse are gastrointestinal issues (decreased appetite, upper abdominal pain, and xerostomia) and insomnia. Some side effects may resolve as you get adjusted to the medication.

How does Vyvanse work?

The exact mechanism of Vyvanse in ADHD and binge eating disorder is not known. Լiѕԁехаmfеtаmiոе dimesylate, the active ingredient in Vyvanse, is a prodrug that is converted to the active component dextroamphetamine (a noncatecholamine, sympathomimetic amine). Amphetamines are noncatecholamine, sympathomimetic amines that cause release of catecholamines (primarily dopamine and norepinephrine) from their storage sites in the presynaptic nerve terminals. A less significant mechanism may include their ability to block the reuptake of catecholamines by competitive inhibition.

How is Vyvanse commonly dosed?

Vyvanse is typically prescribed in doses ranging from 30 mg to 70 mg, taken once daily, usually in the morning.

What are other common names for Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is the brand name for the generic drug lisdexamfetamine.
