Lamictal is an anticonvulsant medication primarily used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder. Lamotrigine is considered a first-line treatment, particularly for the prevention of depressive episodes in bipolar disorder. It is often a good choice for patients with bipolar disorder who experience significant depressive symptoms. Lamictal may also be used off-label to treat conditions such as headaches and trigeminal neuralgia, a chronic pain disorder that causes sudden, severe facial pain.

Lamictal is primarily used in the treatment of depressive episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It is considered a first-line treatment for preventing and managing these depressive episodes. It may similarly be used to treat cyclothymic disorder, a milder version of bipolar disorder. Lamictal is also commonly used to treat seizures, such as those seen in epilepsy. It can also be used to manage the severe, sharp facial pain caused by trigeminal neuralgia.
Lamictal is effective in reducing the frequency of seizures by stabilizing electrical activity in the brain and preventing seizures from occurring. It is particularly beneficial in preventing depressive episodes in individuals with bipolar disorder, a common challenge for those with the condition.
The most commonly experienced side effect of Lamictal is gastrointestinal issues, specifically nausea. Some side effects may resolve as you get adjusted to the medication. A rare but serious side effect that should be discussed with your provider is risk of a life threating rash.
Lamotrigine is a triazine derivative which inhibits release of glutamate (an excitatory amino acid) and inhibits voltage-sensitive sodium channels, which stabilizes neuronal membranes. Լаmоtrigiոе has weak inhibitory effect on the 5-HT3 receptor; in vitro inhibits dihydrofolate reductase. In short, Lamotrigine helps to calm the brain by reducing overactive signals, which can be helpful for conditions like seizures and mood swings in bipolar disorder.
The typical dosage of Lamictal ranges from 25mg to 200mg per day, although the dosage may be increased to up to 400mg if necessary. It is important not to miss doses of lamotrigine as this can increase the risk of a potentially life threatening rash related to lamotrigine. If more than 1 day of medication is missed, generally patients need to speak to their physician to determine how to restart it. The appropriate dosage depends on the patient’s specific condition and should always be discussed with a healthcare provider.
In addition to Lamictal, the medication is also known by its generic name, Lamotrigine. Another brand name for Lamotrigine is Subvenite.
