Cymbalta is prescribed as a first-line medication to those experiencing chronic pain and generalized anxiety. It can be used as a first-line treatment for major depressive disorder when its coupled with anxiety but is often a second-line option used after medications like Fluoxetine (Prozac) or Sertraline (Zoloft).
Cymbalta helps manage depression and anxiety disorders by relieving feelings of emotional distress, reducing anxiety and low mood, and improving energy levels and focus resulting in increased overall emotional stability. Duloxetine can also be used in treating a number of medical diagnosis including PTSD, OCD, and social anxiety among others. Cymbalta is often helpful to those experiencing chemotherapy related pain, specifically by relieving nerve pain and improving quality of life. This also makes it helpful in relieving a similar type of pain in those suffering from Fibromyalgia.
Common side effects often seen in those taking Cymbalta include weight loss, gastrointestinal issues (abdominal pain, decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth), drowsiness, fatigue, and headaches. Some side effects may resolve as you get adjusted to the medication.
Cymbalta is a medication that mainly works by increasing the levels of two important chemicals in the brain, serotonin and norepinephrine. It does this by inhibiting the reuptake of both brain chemicals, allowing for these neurotransmitters to remain longer in the synapse of the neuron, increasing the duration of their effects.
Common dosing for Cymbalta ranges from 20mg to 120mg, most often taken once or twice daily. Dosing depends on the patient’s specific situation and should always be discussed with their physician.
Other common names for the brand name Cymbalta include its generic name, Duloxetine.
