Methylphenidate is a central nervous system stimulant primarily used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. It works by affecting chemicals in the brain that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Off-label, methylphenidate has shown potential benefits for individuals experiencing fatigue or major depressive disorder, particularly when these conditions are present in the elderly or result from either cancer or a terminal illness.

Concerta is primarily prescribed to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. It is commonly used to manage symptoms of ADHD, which include difficulty focusing, limited attention span, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. By addressing these symptoms, Concerta helps improve daily functioning, academic performance, and social interactions. It is considered a first-line treatment for ADHD. For individuals with narcolepsy, Concerta helps manage excessive daytime sleepiness.
The primary benefits of Concerta (methylphenidate) are related to its ability to effectively manage the symptoms of ADHD and narcolepsy. For those with ADHD, Concerta enhances daily functioning by improving performance in academic, social, and professional settings. It helps reduce impulsivity and decreases hyperactivity. As an extended-release formulation, Concerta provides continuous symptom relief for up to 12 hours, making it convenient for individuals who require all-day management of their ADHD symptoms without the need for multiple doses throughout the day. Concerta also helps alleviate daytime sleepiness for individuals with narcolepsy.
Common side effects of Concerta include headache, insomnia, irritability, and gastrointestinal issues, such as decreased appetite, nausea, and dry mouth (xerostomia). Some of these side effects may subside as the body adjusts to the medication.
Concerta is a stimulant that works by increasing the levels of certain brain chemicals (norepinephrine and dopamine) by preventing them from being reabsorbed too quickly. This helps these chemicals stay active in the brain longer. It mainly affects areas of the brain responsible for focus, attention, and behavior, in a way that’s similar to how amphetamines work.
Long-acting extended-release versions of Methylphenidate like Concerta start at 18-36 mg once daily, increasing by 18 mg weekly up to a maximum of 72 mg/day. Dosing depends on the patient’s specific situation and should always be discussed with their physician.
In addition to Concerta, another other common name is the generic name methylphenidate ER.
