Aripiprazole, marketed under the brand name Abilify, is an atypical antipsychotic medication commonly prescribed to treat various mental health conditions. It is primarily used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, agitation, aggression, and tics associated with Tourette syndrome. By helping to regulate mood swings and control psychotic symptoms, Aripiprazole plays a crucial role in stabilizing mental health. Abilify is sometimes prescribed as an adjunct treatment for major depressive disorder (MDD) when primary antidepressants alone are insufficient. In such cases, it helps to enhance mood stability and alleviate symptoms of depression. It can also help to reduce prolactin related side effects of other antipsychotic medications. It is often used to help with obsessions and compulsions seen in OCD.

Abilify is commonly prescribed as a first-line treatment for conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, agitation, aggression, and major depressive disorder (MDD). It may also be used off-label to manage other conditions, including delusional disorders, Huntington’s disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and Tourette syndrome. Abilify is particularly effective in addressing delusions and mood swings, which are frequently observed in these conditions. Chronic depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia can often result in difficulties with emotional regulation, leading to episodes of distorted reality and agitation which are signs that Abilify may be a helpful option.
Abilify offers several benefits for individuals with mental health disorders, particularly those with schizophrenia. It helps manage symptoms such as delusions, mood swings, and agitation. In individuals with bipolar disorder, Abilify is effective in stabilizing mood, reducing the severity and frequency of both manic and depressive episodes. Aripiprazole can be used as an adjunctive treatment alongside other antidepressants for major depressive disorder, particularly in cases where other medications alone do not provide sufficient relief. One of Abilify’s key advantages is its ability to reduce intense emotional reactions and irritability, helping to alleviate agitation while avoiding the heavy sedation that is often associated with other antipsychotic medications.
Abilify’s most common side effects are hypercholesterolemia (increased LDL cholesterol and decreased HDL cholesterol), increased serum triglycerides, weight gain, akathisia (severe restlessness), and headaches. Some side effects may resolve as you get adjusted to the medication.
Aripiprazole is a type of antipsychotic medication that primarily works by affecting dopamine receptors in the brain. It has a strong effect on specific receptors (D2, D3, 5-HT1A, and 5-HT2A), and a moderate effect on others (D4, 5-HT2C, 5-HT7, alpha1 adrenergic, and H1 receptors). It also slightly influences the serotonin reuptake process. Aripiprazole helps balance brain chemicals by partially activating certain receptors (like D2 and 5-HT1A) and blocking others (like 5-HT2A).
Abilify’s dosing typically depends on the condition being treated. It can be taken orally or via long acting injection (LAI), with the usual dosage ranging from 5 mg to 30 mg. Most often, it is taken once a day. The appropriate dose varies based on the patient’s specific situation, so it’s important to always consult a physician before making any adjustments.
Abilify’s generic name is aripiprazole, but you may also see names like Abilify Maintena or Aristada which refer to the injectable versions.
